Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, has 1.2 million inhabitants,
so it is the biggest city in the country. The city dates back to the 7th century BC, when Thracians established a
settlement there. The city has had several names throughout its history, and remnants of the old cities can still
be seen today.
City transport is represented by metro (est. 1998), trams (1901),
buses (1935) and trolleys (1941). 1 January 1901 is considered to be the official date of establishing of city transport in
Sofia. At that day 6 tram lines where opened and they started to connect different parts of Sofia. Nowadays, more than 90 bus
, 17 tram and 9 trolley lines, with more than 600 cars, each day are leaving their depots and fill Sofia streets. Most
of the lines connect center with nearly standing areas Lyulin, Mladost, Nadejda, Krasno selo, Orlandovtzi, Hladilnika.They
operate from 4.30 AM to 11.30 PM. In 1998 opened first metro line, wich now connects Obelja district with center of the city.
It is expected that at the end of 2007 new 3 stations will be opened, until then 8 stations will work each day between 5.00
AM and 11.30 PM.
